MORNINGTON PENINSULA Dolphins

Dolphins

Dolphin watching has become a major visitor drawcard of Port Phillip Bay, with research showing dolphin numbers on the rise. Experts believe there are now about 150 bottlenose dolphins living in the bay, with up to 60 of them frequenting the southern end of Port Phillip.

While these fascinating creatures sometimes cruise close to shore, giving land-based watchers a glimpse, the best viewing is on the water, or in it. Tour operators on both sides of the bay – at Sorrento and Queenscliff – offer dolphin-watch cruises and the opportunity to swim with the mammals.

The tours, which operate under strict guidelines to protect the dolphins, usually run in the warmer months – from October to April – when sightings are more prevalent. Tours last around four hours and include other bay attractions like fur seals and gannets.

Alternatively, take a trip on the car ferry that operates between Sorrento and Queenscliff, as dolphins often hitch a ride on the bow wave, giving passengers a unique view of these beautiful mammals.
